THE PROGRAMS
The NK Performing Arts Community
- THE
- Performing
arts programs are offered after-school, on weekends and during the summer
in the form of dance, drill team, choir, and drama courses. Youth meet
twice a week to work on music theory, vocal training, and dramatic arts.
They give approximately two public performances a month. After reaching
a certain level of proficiency, students join the Senior Level performers
with the goal of touring throughout the United States. As the Foundation's
goal is to encourage well-rounded participant development, all performing
arts programs include job and life skills training, as well as field
trips to local recording studios, dramatic productions and concerts.
Participants have performed in various local, state and national programs,
and events including performances before former First Lady, Hillary
Clinton. They have also sung on stage live with Stevie Wonder and Yolanda
Adams, among many other accomplishments.
The NK Performing Arts Pilot Community
-In an effort to reach more of the youth community, the Performing Arts
Pilot Programs were established. These programs do not have grade point
average stipulations as in the Performance Arts Mainline Community.
In February 2003, the Foundation partnered with Higgins Middle School
to develop Performing Arts Pilot Programs in dance and drill. The Foundation
also partnered with the Pike County Arts Council, in February 2003,
to offer a Drama Workshop Pilot program to youth of the community. This
program does not have an age limit or a grade point average stipulation
to enroll.
The NK Mass Communication Community
- Radio
Teen Talk is a weekly radio show about teens and by teens.
Youth are trained in broadcasting (interview techniques, equipment and
production). This show provides teens with an outlet to express their
opinions while learning. Information regarding members, activities and
events are seen on our website - www.norwoodkids.com and in the newsletter.
Youth participate by supplying news and information in our newsletter
and the website, and obtain the monthly calendar of events.
The NK Digital Community
-
The NK Foundation is dedicated to helping underserved young people succeed
in the digital age. Subsequently, the organization has developed The
NK Digital Community to provide multimedia exposure and computer instruction
to program participants, school-aged youth, their families and the community
at large. Designed to provide all children with technological access,
the program provides homework assistance, structured enrichment classes,
job readiness, economic literacy and life skills training. The program
ensures that participants acquire basic proficiency in word processing,
spreadsheet software as well as Internet instruction.
The NK Academic Community
-
NK Academic Access is a tutoring Program. Though it is not affiliated
with the performing arts aspect of the Foundation, the tutoring program
also serves as a resource for the community at large and for students
enrolled in the program. The Foundation's staff recruits students from
the school districts, who could benefit from tutoring in reading, writing
and mathematics. Parents are contacted and once consent is granted,
the Foundation, the child's parents or guardian, guidance counselors,
and tutors work diligently to ensure that the child comprehends academic
material, makes satisfactory academic progress, and is in a home environment
where learning is reinforced.
The NK Resource Community
-
Ongoing seminars are available to program participants and the community
at large. Experts, socially empowered celebrities, and political decision-makers
are invited to speak on various topics and issues to raise community
awareness. The organization strives to create a comfortable environment
that fosters discussion in order to encourage members of the community
to process and utilize this valuable information. The Resource program
strives to raise awareness and produce long-term results by giving people
the tools to take ownership of their lives.
